Ask Why, Take the Risk: Julius Anders on Hospitality Careers
Julius Anders built his career the long way — starting with the discipline of Swiss hotel management school, earning his stripes at Mandarin Oriental and Corinthia, moving through the lifestyle world at Mondrian London, and then spending six years at Numa scaling one of Europe’s most ambitious digital-first hotel operators from zero to 160+ properties.
He started as Operations Director for all of Europe. He built the structure, the team layers, the standards, the tech stack decisions. And then, when Numa grew large enough to need regional leadership, he took ownership of the DACH market before leaving to found J.Anders Ventures.
Today Julius works as a fractional COO and advisor to hospitality concepts and hospitality tech companies across Europe, with a focus on unit economics, tech and AI integration, multi-site scaling, and remote operations.
In this episode, Alicia and Julius go into all of it.
What it looked like to scale Numa through COVID — and why the pandemic turned out to be both a curse and an unlikely opportunity for a lean digital operator.
Why the 80/20 principle divides startup and hospitality cultures so sharply, and what it actually looks like to build a team that knows when to be a perfectionist and when to move.
What Julius would tell his younger self about asking why, pushing harder for answers, and taking risks before the safe path starts to feel like the only path.
And his honest read on what hospitality hiring needs to become: less volume, more judgment.
Less filling shifts, more finding people who can read a room, make a call, and create the moment that brings a guest back.
As AI and automation take on more of the operational load, the human 20% matters more than ever. The operators who understand that now will win the next decade.
This conversation is for operators, founders, hospitality career builders, and anyone who believes that a great team is still the most valuable thing you can build.
